Sven to quit
September 28th, 2008
The FA have announced that Sven-Goran Eriksson will quit the England Manager’s job after the World Cup finals in Germany
The FA have agreed a compensation package that will buy out his contract two years earlier than expected, but will allow him to see England through to the World Cup.
Sven has weathered many storms during his six year career as England Manager, most of them his own doing, but this was one storm too many.
Stitched up in a sting by the News of the World, Sven’s position was becoming increasingly difficult. It was clear though that Sven was never going to resign his job – the money involved was just too great to do the honourable thing and just walk away.
Following the news Sven announced;
“I am happy that we have reached this agreement and can now continue our preparations for the World Cup.
“It is important to stress how committed I am to success this summer. Let’s go and win the World Cup.
“I know that I have the full support of the players and the FA.
“I have always enjoyed the incredible support of the fans and I know how important they will be to us in Germany.”
So what now for the Swede? Undoubtedly he is a good manager but has he had enough of English football or will he stay to take up residency at an English club? Perhaps Newcastle might hold on to Souness until the end of the season now. Or will Manchester United decide that Sir Alex has had his day? Or if Aston Villa are taken over will his own prophecy come true?
Or would his memoirs reveal that, actually, we didn’t know the half of it!
Perhaps the most interesting scenario is ‘What if England win the World Cup’? How could the FA let go the most successful English Manager in 40 years?
Walking Safari Holidays Are Brill
September 25th, 2008
For those men that have never before experienced a safari in Africa will probably find it hard to imagine the awesome wildlife you will come up close with. The people who come to a safari are regular people like you and me, some are into taking photos, some are into wildlife but all of them are interested in a new beautiful experience.
The phenomenal thing about a wildlife safari is the fact it is so different from a standard holiday to France, there are very little children. Each safari business will provide an English speaking tourist guide to take you through the super areas of South Africa. The most popular African animals you might see are cheetahs. All the above beautiful animals are not tame and of course do not play with them. If you are interested in taking wildlife photos of the rhinos you should make sure you turn off the flash as you do not want to scare the wildlife. The spectacular wildlife in Southern Africa can put a grin on your face. Fast and reliable information on holidays such as Safari Holidays.
If you would enjoy to ascertain more about super holidays in South Africa you could use the search engines like Yahoo to get a safari company that offers holidays from the UK, the costs could range from 200 pounds to 1000 pounds.
Master this software used by all successful salespeople
September 24th, 2008
Selling has been around for thousands of years as people plied
their wares and developed trading lines. Civilizations were
discovered and established based on opening up sales channels
for goods and products. And sales developments starting in the
mid 20th century based in sales training, selling techniques,
and the growth of the telemarketing and inside sales profession
have led to the success of more and more salespeople. And in the
last 10 years, the internet has changed the face of the selling
game by offering lead generation and drip marketing programs and
the ability for buyers to obtain information about a product
before buying. But ultimately it’s still a people game. Without
people to buy, nothing would be sold. And so the development of
Customer Relationship Management principles and software over
the last few decades has given those in the sales, marketing,
and customer service professions a new terminology and
methodology for improving the way they do their job. In short,
CRM as it’s called, is the process of initiating, maintaining,
and improving the relationships an individual and company has
with prospects that lead them to become customers, and repeat
buyers. The software industry took notice of this new concept
years ago and developed software for every type of salesperson -
whether it be ACT and Goldmine for individuals and small
businesses, SalesForce, SalesLogix, and Microsoft CRM for medium
businesses, and Siebel, Oracle, Peoplesoft, and SAP for large
multi-national enterprises. And while the functionality of the
software varies, the principles remain the same. Find prospects
who are potential buyers of your product. Provide value by
discovering whether the problem they have or the one they
haven’t yet discovered can be removed or reduced through a
product. Or on the positive side, the solution, result, or
feeling they’re seeking. Then demonstrate how your product or
service is positioned in the marketplace and why it’s the right
solution for them. And once they purchase what you have to
offer, continue the relationship with them through offering
training, support, service, and upgrades to future products -
ultimately leading to ongoing product purchases and the
sustenance of your business ad income. Whether or not you’re
currently using a sales system based on Customer Relationship
Management principles, you will find that this methodology is
used by every successful salesperson. The commitment as a
salesperson to improving your sales process and performance can
pay great dividends to your bottom line. CRM software is
designed to help you get there.
Prospecting – Keep Good Records and Follow up©
September 22nd, 2008
Studies have shown that in commercial and industrial sales, the initial sale doesn’t come until after the fourth or fifth call. Therefore, we must assume that you have to make at least four or five calls on a new prospect in order to get a sale. Now that may seem simple logic and not require saying, but the conduct of many sales professionals belies that logic.
When I am in the field making cold calls (BLITZ CALL®) with a sales professional, I always tell them to keep good notes on the calls so we know how and when to follow up. They often look at me like I must be nuts, because they know what to do.
“If we get an appointment or a request for information, I will simply do what needs to be done.”
That sounds reasonable, but it does not show up in reality. When we start training a sales team to make prospecting a regular part of their weekly activities, we find several things. The first thing we find is that they suddenly have plenty of time to do the prospecting that is needed. One of the standard excuses for not prospecting is, ” I simply don’t have the time.” Our Prospecting system was developed for that specific situation, so that problem is eliminated.
The second thing we find is that the sales person is not used to prospecting on a regular repeatable basis and therefore is not very well prepared to handle the requirements of their new found proactive endeavors. The result too often is delayed follow up or no follow up at all.
I was prospecting with a salesman in Toronto a couple of years ago with the specific assignment to get him some new customers. He had just been made a salesman, and had not been able to get any new customers in almost 60 days on the job.
I said to him that I would make all of the prospecting calls; he was to watch me and be sure to keep good records. My mistake was to assume that his understanding of good records and mine were the same.
We spent about 4 hours in the field and made 13 cold calls, which resulted in 5 appointments and several call backs. Then we went back to the office to debrief the afternoon and get him ready for the appointments. I would not be able to go on those appointments with him.
When we started the review of the calls he had one of the appointments written down, he remembered two of the others, but the first two were a total blank in his mind. You see he thought he could remember anything of significance that happened when prospecting. He couldn’t. Fortunately, I had kept a few notes and we were able to reconstruct the meeting we had had and then the appointments. Imagine how if he had not shown up for those appointments!
Since that experience I have been amazed to see how many sales people rely on their memories for so many important facts. And almost universally they forget too many details.
Follow up is one of the most important factors to successful prospecting. Simply making those four or five prospecting calls a week can get you many more customers. That is why you prospect. If you don’t keep good records, however, and don’t follow up, your prospecting will result in a lot of wasted time for you and a bad reputation for your company.
There are a host of resources for record keeping and follow up available to the sales professional today ranging from index card boxes to day planners, personal organizers, to computer tracking and contact management programs. There is no reason for shoddy record keeping and follow up.
When you record what was discussed, focus on the prospects wants and needs, the products you have to meet those needs and what ever else you may feel is important. Also, immediately record a date to follow up that is timely for both you and the prospect. Then simply follow up as is appropriate.
In a very short time you’ll know why we put so much emphasis on the ideas, “keep good records and follow up.”

Sales People have an advantage as entrepreneurs
September 22nd, 2008
Zig Ziglar use to say in seminars and on tapes that nothing happens until someone sells something. I had never really understood how absolutely true that was until I got into franchising and saw how one franchise sale could add jobs to the economy, provide great service to a community and change the quality of life for the franchisee and their family. Sales people have an advantage over other folks in business. Our top performing franchisees were always the best sales people. Our toughest competitors, well their founders were great sales people too. To this point I would like to recommend a book to you, that makes this point:
“The Force” by David Dorsey.
This is an interesting book on the psychological turmoil associated with a sales team. How it transfers itself into the personal lives of team members and how companies like GE, Xerox and IBM develop team leaders and sales people to excel. Remember many great sales people have gone on to be great entrepreneurs. Ray Kroc, Ross Perot come to mind. It discusses the motivations and the inner drive of these people. We have many former sales people on our team doing very well. It appears that sales ability as it relates with people is a key ingredient in being a successful franchisee. Now we have successful franchisees, who are not sales people, however I have noticed a higher degree of success with people who have had sales experience.
This book should be read by those who do not want to be sold something by a sales person and by salespeople who think they are missing something or do not understand what their purpose is in their current job. Sales people who are quitting their job should read this book and those thinking of getting out of sales into a business should also read it and think about it.

Another Look at Indians (Native Americans, Amerindians)
September 19th, 2008
Native Americans are often cast in the role of victims of White aggression and unbridled avarice-driven or gratuitous violence, especially in the territories known collectively today as the United States. But the first massacre was perpetrated by Indians in the British colony Jamestown, in Virginia in 1622. They slaughtered 347 white men, women and children on that occasion.
Europeans are also accused of importing pathogens, disease causing agents, such as smallpox and measles, malaria and yellow fever. Indigenous people had no immunological resistance to these illnesses as they were never exposed to them.
But recent findings by a team of anthropologists, economists and paleopathologists who have completed a massive study of the health of people living in the Western Hemisphere in the last 7,000 years – suggest that Native American’s health was severely run down long before the Europeans delivered the coup de grace.
The researchers analyzed more than 12,500 skeletons – half of them pre-Columbian – from 65 sites in North and South America for evidence of infections, malnutrition and other health problems.
The study – “The Backbone of History: Health and Nutrition in the Western Hemisphere”, edited by Dr. Richard H. Steckel and Dr. Jerome C. Rose – discovered that the haleness of Native-Americans declined markedly in the 1000 years before Columbus “discovered” them.
The vast majority of the skeletons showed telltale signs of advanced degenerative joint disease, deteriorating dental health, stature, anemia, arrested tissue development, infections and trauma from injuries. These were attributed by the participants to limited diets and urban congestion. People became shorter and died earlier – on average at age 35 – as the centuries passed.
“Pre-Columbian populations were among the healthiest and the least healthy in our sample,” Dr. Steckel and Dr. Rose said. “While pre-Columbian natives may have lived in a disease environment substantially different from that in other parts of the globe, the original inhabitants also brought with them, or evolved with, enough pathogens to create chronic conditions of ill health under conditions of systematic agriculture and urban living.”
Moreover, there are signs that diseases hitherto thought to have been introduced by the white explorers were actually indigenous.1,000-year-old Peruvian mummies, for instance, were found to have been infected with tuberculosis in their lungs.

Know What You Are Selling As If You Were Buying It
September 18th, 2008
Recently I wanted a new lawn mower as we have an acre of land and we have to keep it mowed pretty regular in the spring and summer and the riding lawn mower from Wally World had fallen apart and had to have something repaired every year for the short four years we limped it through. I called my Dad and asked him what he thought was the best lawnmower for the money as you lay out a hefty amount for almost any riding lawn mower these days with very little guarantee of longevity.
Hustler was the name he gave me. Just like the magazine that used to be hidden in the bottom drawer of quite a few men’s dressers and different places, still is from what I understand, but this was the name of the lawn mower my Dad said would be a wise investment and how we remember the name. Nice sales gimmick too.
While I trust my Dad, I also like to know how deep a hole is before I step into it. So I went looking and found a wonderful site with tons of information about this potential buy and was quite pleased with what I was reading as my old lawn mower had a great engine but the frame and the deck were completely beaten up. This hustler frame carries a life time warranty and has a three year bumper to bumper coverage much like that of a new car. Plus the engines are to die for. Now you must think I am trying to sell you a lawn mower but this is not the case. I want you to understand how much information there is out there for consumers to find. I also would like to give you an example of poor salesmanship while a sale was still made.
I not only was able to look up all the information concerning the different models but was also able to obtain credit long before I presented anything to my husband or showed up at the store for the salesman to sell us our lawnmower. I know more about the hustler line than the sales man did or it at least felt that way and I do not sell lawnmowers. We are not rich folks so for us to spend a few thousand dollars on anything is something we really think about before we do it. When I asked a few questions of the sales man I was not impressed that he was unable to answer my questions correctly but tried to BS his way through it. It was almost comical when I went and pulled a flyer off the wall which I had also gotten off the internet and there at the very top was the answer to my question. And I was the one who looked around at the models on the floor and found one in the price range I felt was reasonable. And while I knew the differences in the models it would have been nice to hear it from someone who supposedly dealt with them on a daily basis and should have been more knowledgeable about them.
I also took my husband to the side and reminded him that just because someone gives you credit does not mean you need to use it. The sales man did not try to sell me the better mower nor did he try to upgrade the engine. He also did not really explain the differences in the price other than the deck on one was larger though I knew why the prices were different and was surprised he did not attempt to explain it any further. He could have made a larger sale but he chose not to.
He was a nice enough man but if I had just walked in off the street I doubt I would of bought a mower from him. It was really nice when the lawnmower was delivered and the delivery guy was nice enough to explain a few things to me which I would have found out from reading but will save me a lot of grief in the long run. I received better service from him in my opinion than the sales man.
I used to sell tires and auto services. I did not know everything nor do I now. I do know in order to sell someone something you need to make that person comfortable with what you are selling and with yourself. Ultimately you are selling yourself before the product as most of the products really sell themselves. You should never sell anything you do not use yourself, are willing to use, or at the very least have read the company pamphlets your customers can read. If you are asked a question and you do not know the answer, tell your customer you don’t know. When you try to fly by the seat of your pants you may find yourself not only without a sale but also without much of job. Honesty is the best policy.
I sold my husband the lawnmower and the sales man just happened to be the one to make the sale. My father sold me the idea of this lawnmower first and after further investigation I agreed with him that it was the best deal. And as you attempt to sell your product be ready to offer real stories about your product and be able to explain why you recommend a certain item. Do not let the internet or a pamphlet be the deciding factor for your customer as was the case of my hustler.
Consider this as you attempt to make a sale today, what questions will your customers ask you? Will you know the answers? If you don’t, will you have the gumption to find the answers for them? They may already know the answer and just want to know what type of person you really are or they may really need your help in making a good decision which is more likely the case.
Either way you may never know but I can assure you the bottom line will tell.

9 Hot Tips for Linking With Other Sites
September 14th, 2008
If you have a website the chances are you receive e-mails from Webmasters asking you to make a link exchange with them. But how do you know whether you should link to their website or not? Well here are 9 rules of thumb, to help guide you through the linking maze.
1. Is their site relevant to yours?
This is key, and more and more important these days. If the answer is YES then it’s worth thinking about. If it’s off topic then you may want to think twice before swapping links. A link from a relevant website to your site is the preferred choice as it can help reinforce your website theme and potentially send some useful traffic your way.
2. How many links is too many on a links page?
When your link is being placed on another website, you ideally want that page to contain as few outbound links as possible. 15 or less outbound links is good, 150 outbound links is not so good. If there are a high number of links on a page [such as 150] then the value of each link out is weakened.
Whilst we can only make assumptions about ‘link weight’ some Webmasters will use a cut off point of 50, 75 or even 100 links on a page as a top end maximum. Anything over 50 outbound links on an average resources page is certainly quite high. However if your link will appear on the page of a good quality site or ‘authority website’ an exchange can still be worthwhile.
3. What is the Page Rank of the site on Google?
Some webmasters focus a lot on Google’s page rank as a measure of a website. If you download and install the Google toolbar you will see a measure of 1 to 10 shown via a horizontal bar for each site you are on. Typically the higher the page rank, the more important a site is perceived to be. A link from a Pr 5 page is often seen as a more powerful link than one from a Pr1 page. However, Google’s Page Rank is only meant to be a rough guide and should not be taken too seriously. Tip one should always preside – a relevant link is always what you want.
4. Should the links page be categorized?
Personally I prefer a well organised links page. If your citing a resource in context of an article you would link from the paragraph, but for the purposes of resource links it is a good idea to organise your pages into relevant themes relating to your website and business. If the site containing the link you are being offered is placed on a page with 200 links all mixed up and covering every topic under the sun, then it’s not ideal. If you’re an online shop selling Art Prints should you really be on the same links page as Hosting Companies and Travel Agents? Make the effort to organise your resource pages, even if some link partners don’t.
5. Is the links page being read by search engines?
It is important that the page your link is on can be found and read by search engines. The page should be no more than 2-3 clicks away from the homepage. You can even test if the web page is in the Google index by visiting www.google.com and
typing into the search bar cache: with the full domain and page name extension after it.
So your query in the Google search bar could read: cache:www.mywebsite.com/thelinkspage.html.
The page should then show in the Google index. If it does not then there are a couple of possibilities. 1/ The page is very new and hasn’t been crawled yet or 2/ the site has a problem being crawled by search engines due to poor internal linking.
6. What if a Webmaster asks me to link to one site, but links back to me from a different site?
This process is sometimes referred to as ‘3-way linking’ or a ‘linking triangle’. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with 3-way linking as it can sometimes be done for convenience. However the first thing you need to do is 1/ Evaluate the site you are linking to and 2/ Evaluate the site and page you are getting the link from. So is the outbound link destination relevant to your site, and is the inbound link you are going to receive also coming from a quality related website?
7. Do I want to associate my business with this particular site?
It is a simple question to answer and this should form part of your decision making process. If you think you have been approached by a good website then the chances are others will feel the same and possibly the search engines too.
8. How do I know if my link partners are still linking to me?
You can do this manually by keeping the information for each link partner in an Excel spreadsheet or similar and then periodically check the exact URLs your link should appear on. However if you get to the stage of having hundreds of link partners this may become rather impractical. At this stage a reciprocal link checker might be advisable. www.linksmanger.com offers a link management system that includes periodic checking of link partners as well as a link exchange system for around $20 a month.
9. So what are the best links?
One answer could be “the ones that deliver lots of relevant traffic”. However links can mean different things to different people. Natural linking [when people link to you without you asking] are a great reward, but it is also wise to ensure you have some links from quality sites in your industry. Teoma can be a good place to find such sites as it focuses more on human edited results than say Google for example. Simply make a search with a good key phrase on www.teoma.com and you will quickly see which websites are the ‘authority’ sites. Set about trying to get listed on as many of the best ones as you can.
