Winter Holidays for the Environmentally Friendly Traveler
December 23rd, 2008
Thousands of skiers will soon be searching for their salopettes and scooting off hunting for the greatest snow conditions.
And without doubt the impact of your carbon footprint will be about as far down the list of vacation musts as a xmas tree after Christmas.
Just last year, a slow snowfall made the the headlines and holidaymakers were panic stricken about the bits of snow disappearing nearly as soon as they landed.
Skiing company Chalet1802, based at the base of Monte Bianco in Chamonix the Alps, is one of the first independent businesses to go carbon negative and offer snowboarders an environmentally friendly choice while reserving their skiing trip.
Chalet1802 proprietor Dubhagain said: Last season was a bit of a shock with the warmest winter in fifty five yrs in France. French ski areas for example Les Menuires, Risoul and Les Arcs lacked clients. It was mild and the snowfall didnt last so much of the early ski season in the mountains was limited. We resolved to go carbon negative to assist in the preservation the ski resort.
Dubhagain said: We’re not trying to prescribe to punters but I believe its important to grant the guests the selection without augmenting the price of the holiday. If the client book with us they may further off-set their carbon output and we absorb the extra prices. Of course we still have a sauna and a hot tub – customers wish for opulence but not at the expense of the surroundings, so we considered methods of reducing the results of a client driving over here for a skiing holiday.”
